How to Choose Chimney Liner for Your Home

A chimney liner is hidden from view, but it has a big job to do. It carries smoke, gases and moisture safely from your appliance to the outside, while helping the chimney draw properly. Knowing how to choose chimney liner is not simply a matter of selecting the strongest metal or the widest pipe. The right choice depends on your appliance, fuel, chimney condition and the way the flue runs through your home.

For many properties across Somerset, Dorset and Devon, particularly older cottages and period homes, a liner is often the sensible answer to an ageing or oversized masonry chimney. A proper survey should always come before a decision, though. What works well for one wood burner may be unsafe or inefficient for another.

Start with the appliance, not the chimney

The appliance is the starting point for every lining decision. Its manufacturer will state the flue diameter, acceptable flue materials and installation requirements. These instructions are not optional details: they are part of ensuring the appliance works safely and as intended.

A wood-burning stove, multi-fuel stove, open fire, gas fire and oil appliance all produce different combustion products. They can also operate at very different temperatures. A liner must be suitable for the fuel you plan to burn, not just for the appliance currently in place.

If you are installing a new stove, do not assume the existing liner can be reused. Its material, diameter, age and condition may not meet the new stove manufacturer's requirements. Equally, fitting a liner that is far larger than required can allow gases to cool too quickly, weakening the draw and increasing the chance of condensation and tar deposits.

How to choose chimney liner material

For most domestic solid-fuel stoves, a flexible stainless-steel liner is used inside an existing masonry chimney. It is fed down the flue and connected at the bottom to the stove pipe or fireplace opening, then finished correctly at chimney-pot level. However, stainless steel is not one single product.

Stainless steel grades

Flexible stainless-steel liners are commonly supplied in 316L or 904L grade. Both may be suitable in the right setting, but they have different levels of resistance to corrosion.

316L is often used for wood-burning appliances where only clean, dry, untreated wood is burned. It can be a good option when the appliance and installation conditions allow it. 904L offers higher resistance to corrosion and is commonly chosen for multi-fuel use, particularly where smokeless fuel may be burned. It is also often selected where a longer-lasting, more hard-wearing specification is needed.

The best choice is guided by the appliance manufacturer's instructions and the fuel you will genuinely use. Burning wet logs, household rubbish, treated timber or unsuitable fuel can damage even a high-grade liner, as well as creating excessive soot and harmful emissions.

Other systems are available. Rigid insulated flue systems are normally used where there is no usable chimney, such as an external flue route or a new installation. Clay, ceramic and pumice liners may be found in some chimneys, especially older or purpose-built systems. Gas and oil appliances may require different corrosion-resistant materials entirely. A liner designed for a wood burner is not automatically suitable for another fuel.

Flexible liner quality and construction

For a domestic stove installation, look for a liner certified for the intended use and manufactured to the relevant British and European standards. It should be supplied with the correct components, including a suitable appliance connector, register plate where required, top plate, clamp, rain cap and cowl if specified.

Avoid making a decision on liner cost alone. A low price can overlook the fittings, access work, sweeping, CCTV inspection, insulation or remedial work needed to complete the job properly. The liner itself is only one part of a safe flue system.

Get the diameter right

The liner diameter is a safety and performance issue. It must be large enough to carry combustion gases effectively, but not so large that gases lose heat before they reach the top of the chimney.

For many wood burners, a 150 mm liner is common. Some DEFRA-exempt wood-burning stoves rated up to 5 kW may be allowed to use a 125 mm liner where the manufacturer permits it and all relevant conditions are met. That does not mean every small stove can use a smaller liner. The appliance instruction manual is the first place to check.

Open fires usually need a much larger flue than a stove because they move a greater volume of air and smoke. Reducing an open-fire chimney to a small stove-sized liner would be inappropriate. If you plan to change from an open fire to a stove, the chimney should be assessed afresh rather than relying on its original fireplace dimensions.

The route also matters. A very tall chimney, several bends, an exposed stack or a property in a windy location can all affect draught. Sometimes a liner diameter that looks correct on paper needs to be considered alongside the full chimney layout and the appliance output.

Assess the chimney before lining it

A liner cannot fix every chimney fault. Before any installation, the chimney should be swept and checked for blockages, loose mortar, damaged flue walls, old debris, birds' nests and signs of damp. A CCTV chimney survey gives a much clearer picture where the condition or route is uncertain.

This is particularly worthwhile in older properties. Chimneys can have unexpected offsets, narrow sections, redundant flues crossing the route, or ledges that catch debris. Knowing this beforehand reduces the risk of choosing a liner that cannot be installed in one continuous length.

The stack and chimney pot need inspecting too. The top of the liner must be secured and protected from rain entering the flue. Damaged pots, unstable brickwork or a poorly fitted cowl can undermine an otherwise good installation.

If the chimney has been used for a long time without lining, stains on walls or a persistent smoky smell may suggest leakage or condensation. These symptoms do not automatically mean a new liner is the answer, but they do mean further investigation is needed before the fireplace is used.

Think about insulation and condensation

Combustion gases need to stay warm enough to rise through the chimney. Where they cool too quickly, water vapour and acidic residues can condense inside the flue. Over time, this can cause staining, unpleasant odours, corrosion and poor stove performance.

In some chimneys, insulating material such as vermiculite may be placed around a flexible liner. This can help keep gases warmer and improve draw, particularly in a large or exposed chimney. It is not a blanket requirement for every installation. The chimney's condition, the liner type, its clearance from combustible materials and the appliance manufacturer's instructions must all be considered.

A damp chimney also needs careful thought. Adding insulation around a liner without addressing water ingress from a damaged pot, flashing or stack can trap problems rather than solve them. The outside of the chimney deserves just as much attention as the flue inside it.

Allow for cleaning and ongoing care

Choose a lining arrangement that can be swept properly. A stove and liner will still need regular chimney sweeping, usually at least once a year for wood or smokeless fuel, and more often if the appliance sees heavy use or the fuel is poor quality.

Access points, bends and the connection at the stove all need to be fitted with future maintenance in mind. Your chimney sweep should be able to clean the full route and identify early signs of tar build-up, corrosion, nesting activity or a failing cowl.

Good fuel protects your liner as well as your appliance. Burn properly seasoned wood with a moisture content below 20 per cent, keep logs dry, and avoid slumbering a stove for long periods. A liner is designed to carry flue gases safely, not to compensate for damp fuel or incorrect operation.

Questions to ask before agreeing to a liner

Before work begins, ask the installer:

  • Is this liner certified for my appliance and the fuel I will burn?

  • What diameter does the stove manufacturer require, and why is this size being proposed?

  • Has the chimney been swept and surveyed for blockages, damage and bends?

  • Does the installation need insulation, a new pot, a cowl or repairs to the stack?

  • Will the work meet Building Regulations requirements, and will the installation be notified or certified where necessary?

A competent installer should answer these clearly, explain any trade-offs and leave you with the relevant paperwork. A carbon monoxide alarm is also required in the room where a new or replacement fixed solid-fuel appliance is installed, and it is a sensible safety measure for any existing solid-fuel fireplace.

A chimney liner should give you reassurance, not another household worry.
