A fire that suddenly sends smoke into the room is more than an annoyance. It can leave your home smelling of soot, make a stove difficult to use and, in some cases, create a serious carbon monoxide risk. Knowing how to spot chimney downdraught helps you act early, before a cosy evening by the fire becomes a problem.
Downdraught is particularly common in exposed homes, older properties and houses with nearby trees or taller buildings. It may only happen in certain wind conditions, which can make it frustrating to pin down. The good news is that the signs are usually clear once you know what to look for.
What is chimney downdraught?
A working chimney relies on warm air and combustion gases rising up the flue and safely out of the property. This upward movement is called draught. A chimney downdraught occurs when air is pushed down the chimney instead, bringing cold air, smoke, soot or unpleasant smells into the room.
It does not always mean there is a fault with the chimney itself. Wind direction, an unusually cold flue, a tightly sealed room or nearby obstructions can all interfere with the natural upward flow. However, repeated downdraught should not be ignored, especially where a wood burner, open fire, gas fire or other fuel-burning appliance is in use.
Signs of chimney downdraught to look out for
The most obvious sign is smoke spilling into the room when you light or refuel a fire. A little smoke when first lighting a cold appliance can happen, particularly if the flue has not warmed up yet. But smoke that continues to enter the room, or suddenly blows back when the wind changes, points towards poor draught or downdraught.
You may also notice a cold current coming from the fireplace or stove when it is not lit. On a windy day, hold your hand near, but not inside, the opening of an unused fireplace. A noticeable flow of cold air into the room can indicate that wind is being forced down the flue.
